Exploring creativity through interdisciplinary art and ecological initiatives

MARLANDS — is my artistic-curatorial work representing the concept of an archipelago. It is an ephemeral institution that emphasizes the importance of the interplay between art, culture, and social environments with natural and geographical factors in their formation and development.

Since 2020, within this framework, which combines anthropological methods, science, and an artistic perspective, I have been conducting research on islands and coastal areas. These studies aim to explore pressing issues related to the environment and culture, as well as to understand the formation of creative identity in the context of territory and the dynamics of developing art structures that contribute to the transformation of communities and cultures. Island landscapes, where the diversity of identities and unique natural ecosystems manifest, connect these lands to the world, creating intersections of ecological, colonial, cultural, political, and aesthetic questions. In MARLANDS, territories converge into a communicative space that serves as a comfortable zone for intellectual and artistic creativity, free from socio-political constraints and activating the imagination.

Acting as a sĂ©mionaute in the artistic process, where living, dynamic, and constantly adapting art connects various artistic fields, practices, and ideas, I strive to contribute to the formation of new meanings and cultural-natural contexts. By initiating collective work among artists, scientists, and cultural organizations, I create interactions that transform into a sustainable system of connections and innovations. Observation and interpretation of symbols, translated through the artistic lens of phenomena, allow for the gathering of material to create multilayered works that represent the creative process as a living performance, synchronized with the landscape. Instead of directly illustrating crises, synergies of co-creation and disagreement arise, enabling an experience of the contradictions and tensions of our time. By integrating scientific observations and knowledge with speculative artistic poetics, I explore pathways for adaptation to life, creativity, and participation in rapidly changing conditions.

Each project in my work, understood as an artistic solution, offers a unique research and creative experience for participants and audiences, presenting solutions and approaches in various formats: movements, art residencies, open studios, live transforming exhibitions, conferences, publications, exchanges, and debates among local, island, and continental actors and organizations.

My Projects

Project MARLANDS 2022-2023

Marlands is a project initiated in 2022 and co-founded by the Creative Europe program of the European Union. Its purpose is to address sustainability development within the cultural sector and contribute to environmental preservation efforts. MARLANDS is a community of contemporary artists and researchers united to address cultural and ecological issues across the Mediterranean islands. This project aims to implement collaborations between arts and sciences to raise awareness across Europe of islands. Our goal is to create and implement specific methodologies of cooperation that offer concrete solutions to residents, wildlife and ecosystems.

The International Art and Science Program (IASP)

The International Art and Science Program (IASP) organized by Art Made Cultural Association in collaboration with the Institute for Research in Environmental and Marine Science (IMEDMAR - UCV) invites artists, curators, researchers, and the public to explore new creative practices and ecosystems along the Mediterranean coast through an innovative ecological art and science festival.
The goal of the program is to create a dynamic creative community that fosters dialogue about nature, culture, and contemporary art while promoting environmental protection and the preservation of biodiversity. Participants will develop projects that emphasize solidarity and collective efforts aimed at restoring life and creating alternative realities, which illustrates harmony with nature

Studio
The Curatorial Studio fosters collaborations between Paris and island art initiatives across Europe, creating a platform for artists and art operators to connect. It aims to strengthen contemporary art dynamics while promoting ecological production and engaging artists, professionals, and the wider public.

MARLANDS

Maritima is a dynamic initiative uniting scientists, artists, organizations, and institutions to foster innovative artistic dialogues about the Mediterranean.

Recognized in 2021 as one of the 28 most sustainable and innovative initiatives by SDSN Youth Mediterranean (aligned with the United Nations' Sustainable Development Goals), the project was featured on page 27 of their report. This honor celebrates youth-led efforts across the Mediterranean's culturally and politically diverse landscape, highlighting their pivotal role in shaping the region's future.

Maritima's selected works explore the Mediterranean's rich histories, migration flows, and cultural exchanges while engaging with its unique natural environment. The sea is envisioned as a living, dynamic entity with its own intricate "inner world," home to species that remain underexplored or critically endangered.

Rooted in the region, Maritima connects the scientific study and protection of this extraordinary marine ecosystem with artistic creativity. Together, they address themes of transformation, interconnection, and sustainability.

MARLANDS is a 2022 initiative co-founded by the Creative Europe program of the European Union, addressing sustainability in the cultural sector while advancing ecological preservation. Bringing together contemporary artists and researchers, MARLANDS focuses on the Mediterranean islands, fostering art-science collaborations to highlight their unique cultural and natural heritage.

By building on existing projects and amplifying the work of selected artists and scientists, MARLANDS seeks to develop interdisciplinary methodologies that benefit local communities, wildlife, and ecosystems. These islands, rich in biodiversity yet vulnerable, are central to reimagining eco-conscious art practices.

Collaborating with locals, scientists, and cultural institutions in Malta, Sicily, Mallorca, Cyprus, and Corsica, MARLANDS aspires to bridge the gap between culture and nature, nurturing sustainable creative processes and amplifying visibility across Europe.

Curatorial Studio : Residency Program for Island Art Initiatives and Artists

The curatorial studio is dedicated to fostering collaborations between the cultural capital of Paris and island art initiatives, as well as contemporary artistic communities.

Based on the previews experience related with a MARLANDS project supported by EU program, one of the primary goals is to create a platform for interaction between invited artists and art operators from islands, focusing on island territories in Europe, including the Canary Islands, Azores, and Mediterranean islands such as Malta, Venice, Sardinia, Sicily, Cyprus, Crete, and Hydra.

This program aims to establish connections and bridges for developing the dynamics and resources of contemporary art in these island territories, while also promoting ecological solutions in production. Target groups include the artists themselves, art professionals, researchers and a broader audience to enhance cultural activities.
